Silica Hotel Iceland: Why I Loved Staying at the Blue Lagoon
When we went to the Blue Lagoon, we were surprised to find that there was only one hotel there, the Silica Hotel. This hotel isn’t exactly cheap, but we decided to book a night there.
Typically, when you visit the Blue Lagoon, you just visit for the day like a water park. There’s a massive parking lot and plenty of space for tour buses to shuffle you to and from the park. You get a whole different experience staying at the Blue Lagoon.
The Silica Hotel Architecture is Unbelievable

When we checked into the Silica Hotel, our mouths dropped. This is definitely one of those places you’ll never forget no matter how much you travel. We booked a night for about $400 USD, but we loved it so much that we talk about going back just to stay there. In my opinion, it’s totally worth every single penny because you don’t just get a pretty roof over your head, you get to use their private lagoon too and you get access to the Blue Lagoon which is just 10 minutes walking distance.
The Silica Hotel is built in the middle of the lava fields and the design is so minimal that it doesn’t disturb the landscape, but it compliments it in a beautiful and otherworldly way. You can’t help but feel like you are on another planet when you look outside your bedroom window onto a sea of jagged lava rocks.
Another great thing about staying at the Silica Hotel is they have a PRIVATE lagoon. No, it’s not as big as the Blue Lagoon, but it’s quite big enough. We spent a ton of time in this lagoon floating from hot spots to cold spots. I think we spent a total of 12 hours in it. They also offer beverage service too.

Blue Lagoon Passes are Included in the Rate
After falling in love with their private lagoon, we honestly didn’t see any reason to go to the Blue Lagoon! But, when you stay at the Silica Hotel, you are given a day’s worth of complimentary passes to the Blue Lagoon which is just a 10-minute walk through the lava fields. So, of course, you have to go check it out! This hotel is a part of the Blue Lagoon property.
As much as I thought I wouldn’t like the Blue Lagoon because I hate crowds, I loved it. But that’s for a totally different post. Anyway, we loved this hotel. It is also the PERFECT place for a Honeymoon or to celebrate an anniversary. This is one of the few places I CANNOT wait to go back.
View the Northern Lights From the Silica Hotel Blue Lagoon
Oh yea, we went during May and unfortunately the Northern Lights were not visible at the time. But, I can think of no better way to view the northern lights than from the warmth and comfort of your own private lagoon in the middle of the lava fields. Now that is a bucket list item worth noting.
Complaints About the Silica Hotel
My only real complaint about staying here is the limited food options. There is NO restaurant in the hotel, and there was just one restaurant inside the Blue Lagoon. This restaurant was very good and in a beautiful location, but it was also a little expensive.
They offer in the lobby a variety of limited snacks. I think I ate about 3 cheese plates while there. There weren’t any noted gluten free options, but most of the foods were fruits and things like that.
My recommendation is to rent a car and then go out into town. Definitely try the restaurant at least for one night through because the food is fantastic.
Book your Silica Hotel Here
- My only recommendation is to book this place ASAP because it fills up fast. We often travel last minute but fortunately for us, a room opened up because it was completely booked when I first checked. It’s a small property and the only one at the Blue Lagoon.
Other Hotel Options Near the Blue Lagoon
- Click here to view a list on Booking.com – This is the closest hotel to the Blue Lagoon, but the Silica Hotel is the only hotel actually in the park.
- Northern Lights Inn – 20 minutes away
As you can see, all the relative distances of these hotels to the Blue Lagoon are really not that close. Right now, the Blue Lagoon Park is building more hotels on site for 2017, but the Silica Hotel is the only actual hotel on the premise right now.
